Parkin is our pick for LB City Attorney

His municipal knowledge is unrivaled.

As the race for city attorney heads toward June, current officeholder Charles Parkin is facing a run-off challenge from City Councilman James Johnson.

When we first sat down with the candidates, they both showed zeal and what we took as an honest interest in representing the city and citizens of Long Beach as the city’s attorney.

Where they differed was in their experience and views of the role for the office, and in both categories these editorial pages found ourselves siding more with Mr. Parkin. And that is why he continues to have our endorsement.

Although appointed city attorney last year, Mr. Parkin has spent 19 years in the City Attorney’s Office, which offered him invaluable knowledge of municipal law that simply cannot be rivaled by his opponent. Further, Mr. Parkin holds a stricter philosophy of the job, seeing his place as the city’s legal representative, not as an advocate for favored, although noble, causes.

But Mr. Parkin also is no rubber stamp for the council, something we saw with his rebuke of the council’s first attempt at a medical marijuana ordinance that he correctly identified as unworkable.

Mr. Parkin has a commendable track record as the city’s legal representative and is the candidate we continue to trust to keep Long Beach on the strongest legal footing.
